Methanol is the simplest alcohol, consisting of a methyl group linked to a hydroxyl group. It is a light, volatile, colorless, flammable liquid with a distinctive odor similar to that of ethanol (drinking alcohol). Methanol is however far more toxic than ethanol. At room temperature, it is a polar liquid.
- Methanol is used as a useful fuel for stunt and racing cars as it is less inflammable and can be mixed with water.
- It is also used as a solvent.
- Methanol is also used to make other chemicals such as formaldehyde.
- Being a polar liquid at room temperature, it is used as antifreeze and a denaturant for ethanol.
